Sabtank selects Cirrus’ SEABERTH

November 26, 2011

Sabtank selects Cirrus’ SEABERTH and ‘Go Live’ with a powerful decision support tool to improve terminal scheduling, management and the bottom line.

Sabic Terminal Services Co (SabTank), operators of a large Saudi Arabian Tank terminal and product handling facility, utilised for storage and seaborne distribution of petrochemical products by multiple companies in the nearby Al Jubail international petrochemicals city, decided to replace their mature TPS (terminal paper flow system) with Cirrus Logistics’ SEABERTH solution. The integrated SEABERTH technology suite added the missing ingredient needed to deliver more efficient operation of a growing terminal. SEABERTH incorporates a sophisticated and automated berth scheduling algorithm that schedules the right ship to the right berth at the right time, using operational and business KPI’s as the drivers. The professional scheduler is presented by the system with a base plan that works, but importantly ultimate control remains with the user; SEABERTH is a decision support tool.

Utilising just one server, SEABERTH technology is used to schedule and plan operations for the SabTank petrochemical terminals in both Al Jubail and Yanbu, as well as the Al Jubail import terminal for Iron Ore and the export terminal for Urea fertiliser. This gives SabTank visibility of all shipping operations and KPI driven scheduling across their businesses in one system.

SabTank are using SEABERTH to improve customer service levels whilst reducing waiting time, demurrage costs and increasing terminal throughput. The integrated and modular SEABERTH software suite acts as the final authority for berth scheduling and serves to standardise the approach to terminal operations across the whole company.

The SabTank business and its people are measured by a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) that SEABERTH will report on, enabling the continuous, early and accurate identification of key areas of the business where excessive costs and/or inefficiencies are occurring. This provides SabTank the ability to quickly highlight high value targets for improvement or investment. Additionally, by using the SEABERTH simulation module they are able to evaluate the effects and cost benefits associated with any change, assessing a number of possible solutions before committing to a plan of action.

SEABERTH’s comprehensive multi-user environment also helps the logistics planning department move a long way towards a paperless environment, whilst expediting the communication of business critical information up and down the supply chain.

Mr. Hashbal Al Shahrani, SabTank’s Manager of the Chemical Logistics Department, commented, “The SEABERTH solution has added an automated, intuitive and integrated approach to berth scheduling and management reporting across our multi-product terminals in Al Jubail and Yanbu.” adding “The capability gives our scheduling and planning teams a clear vision and greater focus on the effects of good, supportable decision making in the product and ship scheduling process.”

The SEABERTH system was implemented in April 2011 and was initially run in parallel with SabTank’s previous solution. By May, after SEABERTH training for all key staff in all locations had been successfully delivered in just two weeks; only the SEABERTH solution was being used. The successful system ‘go-live’ was on-time, a significant achievement by the SabTank and Cirrus Logistics teams given the scope of the project and the tight timescales involved.

SEABERTH provides SabTank with a comprehensive planning tool, containing all the port constraint information needed to develop robust, business oriented berthing plans. Site specific reporting output enables the team to report on schedules and terminal contractual performance. SEABERTH’s integrated performance analyser ensures that SabTank can easily evaluate port utilization and efficiency on demand.

David Stanhope, Cirrus Logistics’ CEO, stated “We are pleased that such high profile organisations as SabTank are now added to our growing list of SEABERTH customers around the world. We are confident that our tools will continue to enable the SabTank team to further optimise their operation and reduce costs.”

Mr Al-Sharani concluded “We are confident that the combination of proven SEABERTH technology and the skill of our teams will provide us with a return on our investment on an ongoing basis.”
